Upcoming Facebook Changes to Affect Indie Authors

According to Social Media maven Mari Smith, Facebook is about to make changes that will affect indie authors who use the social networking site to promote their books.

I don’t usually scoop on this day, but this was a true scooper!

Facebook is holding a press conference next Thursday apparently to unveil an all-new News Feed for both mobile and desktop. Maybe with filtered streams other than Top Stories or most recent? Possibly even a single column Timeline rollout. These include a Photos feed of Facebook and Instagram photos (Think: author photos and book cover photos). Cool!

Also, check out Facebook’s “Graph Search”. Click through to the article to find out how to get your Facebook author page “Graph Search ready”. It is supposed to excite users with thousands of ways to search for things related to our interests and friends.

What could this mean for us authors? Instantaneous updates of our photos to mobile phones and desktops from our FB pages!

Survey: Nearly 4 in 10 Women Have Decreased or Stopped Using Social Media

Remember the Roman Empire? It was the most influential force in the world. The place everyone wanted to be. The center of all news, art, com (Market research is beginning to show women decreasing or cutting off their use of #social media.

This is an interesting article to me. Whether this trend continues of women decreasing or stopping their social media use remains to be seem.

An interesting statistic: A higher percentage of “defectors” fall into the 18-24 age range, which puts social networks with a younger population at a higher risk for losing valuable members. These sites include Instagram, YouTube and Pinterest.

If your books are targeting specific niches for women, you may need to tweak your marketing efforts. Are we ever going back to print advertising? I don’t think so. But newer marketing methods are always evolving, so we need to keep our finger of the pulse of women–some of the biggest consumers.

Always Writing: All Indie Authors Need to Read This!

I’ve seen lots of changes going on with Amazon, and wasn’t sure what was happening, but this author gives an interesting perspective. He suggests it is not Amazon who is afraid of the success of some indies–but actually the big publishers.

First, the tags disappeared on our books. Of course, we can still “tag” when we set up the book for upload on Amazon. We can set up 7 of them. When on our book page, readers cannot add any tags of their own. 

Then, the “likes” on the books disappeared. Mine came back for a short time, but are gone again. Personally, I think it is fun and interactive to have the “likes” there. Sure, it can be abused but mostly likely is not in most cases.

This last Grammy Awards is a perfect example of how independents are taking over. More than half the awards went to artists who published under their own labels. Even the song of the year has no major label backing.

What are the big publishers afraid of? Little indie publishers selling a few hundred or thousand books–compared to their millions?

Have you heard negative feedback about your writing? Here’s what Seth Godin heard. His high school English teacher wrote in his yearbook: “You are the bane of my existence and it’s likely you’ll never amount to anything.”

Don’t listen to the negative voices around you. Write what you like to write and write like there’s no tomorrow!

How successful self-publishers are using QR codes to boost their readership

QR codes are hot, but most people still don’t have a clue as to what they are–or how to use them for book promotion.

Just think of them like bar codes on grocery store items. When the clerk scans the code with her wand, it brings up all the information about the item. QR codes can be used this same way; (scanned by smartphones) with the exception that you can direct your reader WHEREVER you want them to go.

The software I use to generate my ebooks has a QR code generator built in, which I use on the front cover of my ebooks. It takes people to my website. Some other ideas for authors to use QR codes?

  • In your email signature
  • On a poster at your book signing
  • On your business cardO
  • On a bookmark
  • On your website (perhaps pointing to a sales or squeeze page)
  • On your social mediaOn the back cover of your book to take your reader to another publication

Is taking on the challenge of writing “serials” for Amazon right for you and your audience? It can be lucrative, but very tricky. As you are writing your story, you are also posting the chapters for readers to pick up on and pass on to others. 

“50 Shades of Gray” started out as FREE serialized Twilight fan-fic. It then built up its audience over time–and we know the rest of the story.

LinkedIn: Promoting Your Book With LinkedIn

There are many things you can do to attract attention to your publication, but promoting effectively with LinkedIn requires specific techniques that are professional without being overly self-promotional.

OK. Everyone wants to talk about Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+ for promotion of your ebooks; but what about forgotten step-child Linked in?

I admit, I was slow to embrace Linked In as a place to promote myself as an author, but I am slowly coming around. 101 Members Worldwide isn’t shabby!

You can not only set up a (FREE) and powerful profile to showcase you and your talents, but you can also list your publications, links, and descriptions to said books in the same location.

There are a myriad of groups to join that will allow you  to promote a link to your newest work. Here’s a sampling of a few: Books and Writers, Writer’s Cafe, Linking and Forwarding on B&N and Facebook. Do a search and find several to join–just don’t spam the group.

This beautiful infographic shows the stats on users of Linked In. LI is used by 69 of the top 100 Fortune 500 companies, and there is a higher trust factor. I think of Linked In in terms of lots of professional business people hanging around the worldwide water cooler.

Jeff Bullas has shared, in his usual funny way, some very simple but effective tips to share your content with the world.  He states that a blogger needs to develop the skills of a drug dealer, a teacher and a chef. Authors love to write, and they should be writing every day, but we also need to add in a bit of time to promote that writing.

At the very least, you should have a blog (your home for your books), and once you have your blog, you should tie it in to other social media channels to promote.  Here’s a few of the top ones:

3) GOOGLE+

4) PINTEREST

5) LINKED IN
